Press Note: Saipem launches agricultural development initiative in Angola
San Donato Milanese (Milan), October 22, 2015 – Saipem, together with Petromar, its joint venture with Sonangol, will today officially launch new agricultural development initiative, Alegria do Ambriz, developed in collaboration with the Municipality of Ambriz in Angola, at an opening ceremony due to be held at the project location.
The Alegria do Ambriz project - in line with Saipem’s strategy of building sustainable value in the communities in which it operates - is being carried out 10 km from the town of Ambriz in the northern part of Angola. The aim of the project is to strengthen agricultural activities in the area in order to contribute to the income of 25 family communities of small farmers living around the nearby Quinje lagoon.
The project focuses on increasing agricultural productivity by building up farmers’ skills and knowledge, reintroducing agricultural technologies and supporting and strengthening agricultural extension services. Saipem has already repaired roads and prepared the soil for cultivation, as well as building storage and training facilities, and is now installing irrigation systems which will provide each land parcel with water access.
Once this work has been completed, each family community will receive comprehensive theoretical and practical agricultural training, which will cover general approaches to agriculture suitable to the area, practical training for specific crop types, and training related to managing and maintaining the irrigation system and running an agricultural cooperative.
