Saipem confirms its strategic decision to be among the energy transition leaders and enablers. Technology will play a crucial role in enabling a transition that combines growth, economic wellbeing, inclusion, and environmental sustainability. And Saipem has always worked with innovative technologies to develop complex systems and infrastructures.

Our broader strategy to mitigate climate change and protect the environment is based on two pillars:

  • supporting customers in their decarbonisation process, acting as a facilitator of low climate and environmental impact strategies and technologies, while simultaneously playing a key role in the energy transition;
  • improving the efficiency of our assets, operations and supply chain to reduce Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions within our Net Zero Programme;

What we mean by reducing
Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions:

  • Scope 1: emissions from sources that are under the operational control of Saipem, for example, emissions from combustion in owned or controlled boilers, generators, vehicles, etc.

  • Scope 2: indirect emissions from the generation of purchased or acquired energy (electricity or heat) consumed by Saipem.

  • Scope 3: all indirect emissions (not included in scope 2), includes emissions from producing, shipping, and disposing of goods used by the company, as well as from employee commuting and business travels.

The pillars find concrete expression in defined and structured objectives

The achievement of Net Zero by 2050 for emissions, as a long-term objective, with specific and timely efficiency initiatives to immediately start reducing the carbon footprint of assets and operations, by also supporting customers in their decarbonisation process, through intermediate targets:

  1. Achieving Carbon Neutrality in Scope 2 emissions by 2025
  2. 50% reduction of Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2035

Supply chain sustainability by:

  1. Enhancing the monitoring of its carbon footprint
  2. Researching options for low carbon technologies and materials in the market, to refine the strategy to manage Scope 3 targets;

Abating greenhouse gases with Bluenzyme™

In the quest for decarbonisation in the realm of heavy industries, where emissions are harder to abate, Saipem’s toolbox now offers a new solution that represents the latest evolution in over 20 years of research and development in CO₂ capture: Bluenzyme™.

A plug-and-play solution that is gaining prominence as a strategic ally to heavy industries, Bluenzyme™ has adaptable designs tailored to capture CO₂ across diverse industrial processes. And not just in new plants, but also in existing ones. This flexibility minimises downtime and disruptions, facilitating a swift return to operations, without resuming heavy emissions.

Its modular design not only enhances cost savings for clients but also ensures better quality control through standardised processes and rigorous inspections. Bluenzyme™ also excels in energy efficiency, operating with optimised power consumption and the ability to harness low-grade residual heat sources.

Personnel wellbeing is paramount in Bluenzyme™ projects, with controlled off-site construction ensuring strict adherence to safety standards and consistent processes reducing the risk of accidents during installation and operation.

Bluenzyme™ offers a transformative answer to industrial carbon reduction. Crafted with Saipem’s trademark engineering proficiency, this solution embodies the essence of our commitment to efficiency, quality, and sustainability.

“Leveraging on our experience as a tier-1 EPC contractor, we developed Bluenzyme™ to meet our clients’ expectations for a smooth and de-risked execution. In fact, we employ a modular and safe construction approach that minimises the risks of accidents during installation, reduces construction timelines, and mitigates expenses”

Kaoutar El-Khorassani - Low Carbon Solutions Commercial Manager

“The use of the carbonic anhydrase enzyme for carbon capture represents a groundbreaking innovation in CCUS practices. Saipem drew inspiration from nature, particularly the human body and other living organisms, where the enzyme carbonic anhydrase plays a crucial role in facilitating CO₂ exchange during respiration”
