The project
The Milan-Bologna High-Speed/High-Capacity Railway is a Lump Sum project that consisted of the design, construction, testing, and commissioning of about 182 km of new High Speed/High Capacity rail lines, 35 km of interconnections, and 35 km of traditional lines between Milan and Bologna, as part of the High Speed/High Capacity Torino-Milano-Napoli-Salerno railway, which constitutes the main Italian railway corridor.
Saipem led the CEPAV UNO consortium, which was assigned by the client RFI Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (FS Group) the design and construction, by functional lots, of the Milan-Bologna railway line, fully operational since 2008.
The works carried out include embankments, viaducts, bridges, artificial tunnels, overpasses, technological buildings, railway superstructure, signaling, telecommunications (ERTMS/ETCS level 2 for interoperability), roads, and power lines.

The High Speed/High Capacity Milan-Bologna railway line and related works, crossing the Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna regions, involved 44 municipalities in the provinces of Milan, Lodi, Piacenza, Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, Bologna and Cremona.
To carry out the works, 13 million sqm of land, 90 thousand sqm of buildings were expropriated and a further 6 million sqm of land were temporarily occupied during the construction phase. In addition, 4.450 interferences with public services were resolved, environmental activities in an area of 750 ha and 118 km of noise barriers were laid, 290 km of roads and 216 km of power lines were built.
