The project

The Shah Gas Plant (SGP) is located about 180 km southwest of Abu Dhabi, in an area dominated by large sand dunes. The SGP receives and processes very sour gas— containing more than 23% vol. hydrogen sulphide and 10% vol. carbon dioxide — from the nearby Shah Arab Sour Field.

An extraordinary project

The high hydrogen sulphide content, along with the magnitude of processed gas and produced sulphur, set new benchmarks for the gas processing industry. For one, SGP has a unique plant layout configuration which minimizes safety issues and reduces escalation in case of potential emergency situations. SGP started operation in January 2015 and reached full production capacity in July 2015. Saipem, acting as the main EPC contractor, has also moved ahead with Optimum Shah Gas Expansion (OSGE) Project implementation activities, which aimed to boost gas treating capacity up to about 1.45 billion standard cubic feet per day. The project leverages Saipem’s remarkable technological knowledge and capabilities in order to operate in a brown field area.
