University of Urbino and Saipem launch GeotherMOOC, the first online course dedicated to geothermal energy value chain

The two partners combine technical and academic expertise to spread specialized knowledge about geothermal energy and its potential, with the aim of promoting sustainable and innovative solutions

Urbino/Milan, November 19, 2025 – The University of Urbino Carlo Bo and Saipem are launching “GeotherMOOC,” the first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) dedicated to geothermal energy. Free and accessible to all, the course explores the potential of this continuous renewable source, able of providing stable and sustainable electrical and thermal energy.

The initiative, promoted by Saipem People Academy with the scientific consultancy of the University of Urbino, involves experts from CNR, the Polytechnics of Turin and Milan, the University of Glasgow, and Saipem, under the coordination of by Mariella Leporini, Geothermal Energy Product Manager at Saipem.

The goal is to synergize industrial experience and academic skills to spread specialized knowledge in the geothermal sector and help to train new professionals for the energy transition.

Structured in eight lessons, “GeotherMOOC” will be available via live streaming and later on demand at the link: https://mooc.uniurb.it/geothermooc. The content, both in Italian and in English, will offer a comprehensive overview of the geothermal supply chain, from geosciences to drilling, from surface plant engineering to the most innovative solutions such as closed-loop systems and integration with CO2 capture and storage (CCS).

Coordinated by Professor Alessandro Bogliolo, Rector’s Delegate for Scientific Dissemination and Public Engagement at the University of Urbino, the first lesson, was delivered by Adele Manzella, geophysicist and Senior Researcher at CNR, and is already available on the web. The opening featured greetings from Giorgio Calcagnini, Rector of the University of Urbino, and remarks by Alessandro Puliti, CEO of Saipem, who highlighted the strategic role of geothermal energy in energy diversification and the company’s technological innovation. The second lesson will be on streaming on November 26 at 11:00 am.

With “GeotherMOOC,” Saipem and the University of Urbino strengthen their commitment to spreading scientific and technological competences for a sustainable, low-carbon energy future.
