Saipem’s Urea Technology for a New Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. Fertilizer Plant in Turkmenistan

Saipem has been awarded a new Urea License Agreement by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd (MHI) for a new fertilizer plant in Turkmenistan.

The contract entails the license for the use of Saipem’s proprietary and patented Snamprogetti™ Urea technology as well as the related engineering services associated. The urea unit will have a production capacity of 3,500 tonnes per day and will be designed in accordance with the highest standards of efficiency, reliability and safety.

The new project follows the Garabogazkarbamid plant, commissioned in 2018 in Garabogaz, Turkmenistan, developed with the participation of Mitsubishi and Gap Insaat Yatirim ve Dis Ticaret A.S., for which Saipem supplied the Snamprogetti™ Urea technology under a contract awarded in 2014 by MHI.

This new award strengthens Saipem’s leadership in the fertilizer sector while confirming the reliability and high performances of the Snamprogetti™ Urea technology, used, to date, in 147 units at global level.

The new contract is also part of a consolidated industrial collaboration between Saipem and MHI, characterized by joint projects across different technological areas. In addition to the long-standing cooperation in the fertilizer sector, in 2023 Saipem and MHI entered into a General License Agreement for the deployment of MHI’s post-combustion carbon capture technologies (KM CDR Process™ and Advanced KM CDR Process™) in the execution of large-scale CCUS projects.
