Saipem hosts technologies demonstration in Trieste for monitoring subsea CO₂ transport and storage infrastructures
Saipem hosted at its Trieste base an international delegation of industrial partners, research centres, institutions, and European stakeholders as part of the event Accelerating CCUS Deployment by Connecting Policy, Industry, and Innovation, organised within the Annual Meeting of the COREu project. The initiative provided an opportunity to showcase the company's technologies for monitoring subsea CCUS infrastructure, including the FlatFish autonomous underwater vehicle, which, thanks to its operational flexibility, can be equipped with systems for detecting potential CO₂ leakages in offshore environments.
Funded under the Horizon Europe programme and coordinated by SINTEF Energy Research, the COREu project brings together more than 40 industrial and scientific partners with the aim of accelerating the development of safe, reliable, and scalable infrastructure for CO₂ capture, transport and storage. Within this framework, Saipem contributes to the development and demonstration of technologies dedicated to storage site monitoring, subsea CO₂ leak detection and offshore microseismic monitoring through its Hydrone robotic platform, including FlatFish, and Seanapsys, its subsea architecture for data acquisition, processing and point-to-point transmission.
More than 70 participants attended the visit to the Saipem base, where they witnessed the deployment of FlatFish and a demonstration of its operational capabilities. Saipem’s proprietary autonomous underwater vehicle is designed to perform inspection and monitoring activities on offshore infrastructure, collecting data directly from the seabed and supporting surveillance activities for CO₂ storage sites and subsea transport networks.
The demonstration highlighted how autonomous robotics, advanced sensing technologies and data acquisition can contribute to the safety and reliability of future CCUS infrastructure. During the visit, participants were also introduced to the Hydrone platform and other solutions developed by Saipem for the inspection, monitoring and surveillance of offshore infrastructure, including rapid emergency response operations.
Through its contribution to the COREu project and the activities carried out at its Trieste base, Saipem confirms its commitment to the development of advanced technologies for monitoring subsea CCUS infrastructure, supporting the deployment of innovative solutions that contribute to the decarbonisation of European industry.
