Environmental Services

Committed to continuous environmental improvement. Trusting in the communication and interaction with the public in order to be compliant with local relevant laws and regulations to achieve a sustainable development.
Main goals are to enhance waste minimization and reuse; to promote environmentally conscious design, to improve soil, water and air quality through innovative and cost effective technologies and to make efforts in order to safeguard the environment through the exploitation of renewable sources.

Through integrated skills and competencies, Saipem assures complete environmental services from prevention to remediation:

Design Disposal
Technologies Restoration
Project execution Abatement and treatment

The areas of excellence are here shortly described:

Pollution prevention
Reducing the amount of pollution generated by an industrial process, managing a pollutant after it is formed and reducing its impact upon the environment thus increasing the process efficiency, thereby cutting the amount and/or the quality of pollutant generated at source.
Pollution prevention is based on “green design” environmental management strategy (also known as environmentally conscious design) and it aims at using more efficient manufacturing processes and better materials to narrow the quantity of waste as well as its toxicity and hazard level.

Carbon capture and Sequestration (CCS)

The increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration is most likely the major cause of global warming. One of the options to control future emissions of CO2 in the atmosphere is to capture it at the source of emission and to store it in underground reservoirs.
Saipem, with substantial know-how and experiences in the entire CO2 capture, transportation and storage chain, will contribute to the joint technical programme CCS (Carbon, Capture & Storage) sponsored by ENI – ENEL (2009 – 2013)

Sulphur and H2S Management
Saipem’s activities cover gas treatment, acid gas, re-injection and systems for sulphur gathering and transport.
Gas treatment means acid gas removal and sulphur recovery; acid gas re-injection means injection of sour and acid gas mixtures in geological structures in order to avoid emissions into the atmosphere and reduce the costs related to the treatment of acid gas streams produced when exploiting sour hydrocarbon reservoirs.

Applied Ecology and Monitoring
It aims to characterize the environmental and the social context by identifying the criticalities and providing the data needed to ensure project sustainability during the implementation and operation phases.
These activities concern environmental matrix evaluation, feasibility planning, sustainability and biodiversity planning, environmental and social impact assessment, monitoring of marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and remote monitoring of plants and pipelines.

Waste Minimization and Recycling
This service reduces the amount and toxicity of hazardous waste, adopting more efficient manufacturing processes and better materials to decrease production of waste.
Development of innovative and commercially successful replacement products, as renewable technologies, acid gases injection, water reuse, etc.

Industrial Waste Management
These activities include a preliminary knowledge-gathering stage (analysis of chemical, hazard, safety characteristics), and optional stage involving the organization of waste packing, loading, transport and intermediate treatment or storage, and a final stage of waste disposal or reuse. Saipem has strong capability in the design and construction of industrial landfill for hazardous wastes.

Plants Decommissioning
These are activities regarding characterisation and risk assessment, remediation design (management of toxic and cancerogenic chemicals, adoption of confined area, removal of residues, gas free certification), engineering of plants and pipelines dismantling, supervision of field activities and final waste management.

Environmental Treatment Plants

Activities concerning planning and construction of plants for site remediation, waste recycling and water treatment – covering groundwater, process and waste streams.
The methodological approach consists in the analysis of the physical, chemical, biological characteristics of matrix; conceptual design (flow-rate, plant philosophy, legislative context); basic design (process design, layout design and cost estimation); front end design (project endorsement), detailed engineering for procurement and plant construction.

Site remediations

These activities cover the planning and execution of protection, conservation, restoration and rehabilitation projects, and the assessment of soil, sediment and ground water.
They also concern groundwater modelling and health and environmental risk analysis.
The safety measures enclose plastic diaphragms, surface sealing, hydraulic barriers and the planning and application of soil and groundwater remediation using different technologies: by means of biological, chemical-physical and thermal approaches.

Oil spill response

These services include design evaluating the spill fate and transport with the aid of modelling and satellite-assisted imaging. They also regard equipment supply, providing equipment according to specific activities, preparing manuals, operating instructions and procedures, ensuring an Emergency response “on call”.
This service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and operates on the basis of “Alert Procedure”.
