ENERGY EFFICIENCY

One of Saipem’s main commitments is to implement strategies and initiatives, where possible, to reduce energy consumption and/or increase renewable energy production/use, thus reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Energy efficiency can be achieved through two levers:

  • influencing the behaviour and habits of personnel
  • technical solutions.

In terms of the first lever, recent years have seen Saipem launch worldwide campaigns designed to underline the importance of responsible environmental behaviour.

Meanwhile effective technical solutions for achieving energy efficiency are identified by conducting energy assessments on critical company assets (e.g. rigs, yards and vessels).

Saipem’s energy efficiency strategy can be divided in two major steps:

  • The first step is knowledge: i.e. performing a detailed analysis of assets to identify the areas where they consume most and to determine how to improve their efficiency.
  • Step two involves the implementation of the technical solutions identified to obtain optimum cost effectiveness.

Carrying out an Energy Assessment means analysing an asset - "taking it apart" to identify the energy flows and the areas where consumption is highest in order to determine where to intervene to achieve greater efficiency. The technical solutions identified always come with a cost/benefit analysis which represents the main driver for choosing and establishing an action plan.
