Built in Pori (Finland) by RAUMA REPOLA Shipyards, delivery 1984, based on FRIEDE AND GOLDMAN design, the Scarabeo 6 represents the best of third generation semisubmersible drilling units. The main operational functions of the vessel are:
• Exploratory drilling
• Production drilling
• Utilisation for early production and extended well test.
The Scarabeo 6 design consists of a main deck supported by 6 columns, 2 pontoons, 3 horizontal bracings, 8 upright diagonal bracings and 4 horizontal diagonal bracings.
In 2012 Scarabeo 6 performed shipyard works in order to increase water depth capability up to 1,100 m; works included an upgrade of the BOP control system.
In keeping with the highest environmental regulations, the Scarabeo 6 is “zero pollution” and “zero discharge”.
The Scarabeo 6’s drilling equipment is designated to reach a vertical depth of 7,620 m in 1,100 m of water depth and is outfitted with a 1,400,000 lbs dynamic hook-load and a 650 tons (m) Maritime Hydraulic top drive. The large pipe rack area is suitable for storage and handling of 50 ft long riser joint.
Vessel systems are designed with a high degree of redundancy. System has power supplies from redundant subsystem and may be controlled from alternative control stations. This arrangement reduces the possibility of total blackout and improves operability under emergency. All pipings, such as cooling water, fuel oil, ballast, service air are, as far as possible, routed clear of hazardous areas. Quality Assurance/Quality Control have been implemented throughout the design and the construction phases.
